Deepwater Step by Step (5 of 42)

You might have noticed the rock wall is gone.  It was not glued in place so that I could work on the pier.  The next to last step was to replace the rock wall and then pour the water.  The Pier is scratchbuilt.  It started as a 1/4" piece of hard wood.  It was 12" wide by 24" long and I picked it up at a Home depot.  I laid the track ties on the board first and that was done by lining up the pier and drawing a line down the center of the track line.  I then painted the ties, Floquil Rail Tie Brown and Grimy Black, diluted with Dio-sol as the paint was applied.   The decking is a bit unusual. I had purchased a number of bags of ties for the mainline, on which I use the full profile tie.  After I got home from the Hobby shop (40 miles) I realized that one of the bags were the thin ties, about the same thickness as ties on commercial flex track. I decided that 9' 6" length would be close enough to 8' scale 1/6's for the decking. There is about 640 of these ties glued to the Pier base, one at a time, while I sat in the backyard having a cool one. Later photos will show the pier after being stained.  I used Teak, Rail Tie Brown (very diluted) and Grimy Black (very diluted).
